Interactive Downswing Frequency & Duration Calculators
Interactive Downswing Calculators
The first of the interactive graphs below shows the frequency at which a player will experience a downswing of a certain
magnitude or greater. For example, reading the default values off the graph,
a player with a win rate of 1 BB/100 and a typical 6-max limit Texas Hold'em standard deviation
of 17 BBs/100 experiences a 300 BB or greater downswing approximately once in every 102,131 hands.
It's important to point out that the graph specifies how often one will experience a downswing of a certain
size and NOT the proportion of time one will be in a downswing of a particular size.
The second of the interactive graphs below shows the frequency at which a player will experience a downswing of a certain
duration or greater. For example, reading the default values off the graph,
a player with a win rate of 1 BB/100 and a typical 6-max limit Texas Hold'em standard deviation
of 17 BBs/100 experiences a 30,000 hand or greater downswing approximately once in every 178,667 hands.
It's important to point out that the graph specifies how often one will experience a downswing of a certain
duration and NOT the proportion of time one will be in a downswing of a particular duration.
To use the Interactive Downswing Frequency & Duration Calculators
your browser needs to support either VML (Internet Explorer 6+) or SVG (Safari 3+, Opera 9+, Firefox 2+).
You can add SVG support by installing the Adobe SVG Viewer.
Note: You are free to distribute unmodified copies of the following graphs in whole and
in any format (rasterized, SVG, VML, or print) free of charge.
Win Rate: BBs/100,
Standard Deviation: BBs/100
Upswing Frequencies for the Losing Player
For a losing player with a negative win rate, the same methods can be used to estimate
the frequency at which the player will experience upswings of a particular frequency and duration. We shall refer to these two
as the Upswing Magnitude Frequency and the Upswing Duration Frequency respectively.
The interactive graphs above will display the upswing frequency and duration graphs if a negative number is input into
the win rate.
